Iraqi insurgents seek chemical weapons / Likelihood of success grew with U.S. occupation, report says
by adamist at 10:00 am EDT, Oct 11, 2004

] An exhaustive report released last week by Charles
] Duelfer, the CIA's chief weapons investigator in Iraq,
] concluded that Saddam Hussein destroyed his stockpiles of
] chemical and biological weapons in the early 1990s and
] never tried to rebuild them. But a little-noticed section
] of the 960-page report warns that the danger of a
] "devastating" attack with unconventional weapons has
] grown since the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq
] last year.
]
] The Bush administration, which went to war primarily to
] disarm the Baghdad regime of suspected illicit
] stockpiles, has not previously disclosed that the
] insurgent groups that have emerged and steadily expanded
] since Hussein's ouster now are seeking to develop their
] own crude supplies of such deadly agents as mustard gas,

Yup, as I'm reading it myself, there are several little-noticed sections of the report. The insurgent-developed WMD section is definitely interesting, and trying to determine how much of their knowledge is home-grown, and how much is using the intellectual capital from Saddam's scientists' knowledge.

Another section that I'm surprised hasn't gotten more attention, is the part about secret labs, and testing on human subjects, including fatalities. I've also been tracking the reports about the Iraqi efforts to conceal and "sanitize" sites right as we were invading. Some labs were stripped, by the Iraqis, of all supplies, all equipment. When our teams got there, to multiple sites, we found nothing except piles of still warm ashes. One lab was even "sanitized" to the point that even its floor tiles had been removed!

So lots of unanswered questions still. And I'm still reading . . .
