They're quite different.

First, Metafilter is a closed community. Its been closed for years. If they offer any features for users that differ from whats visible without an account, I don't know about it because I don't have an account.

MemeStreams offers a number of features that don't appear in Metafilter. Examples include the reputation agent (a personalized view of the data), the relationship between threads and urls that allows you to attach a discussion to any website and reference it with a bookmarklet, a topic system, customized searches that determine what a particular subgroup within the site thinks the most relevant result for your search is, etc...
