Now we have news that when the new iOS 5 is available for iPhone, iPod and iPad, you could be in a position to have this download installed almost instantly via a new Time Capsule. It has been reported that Apple are working towards releasing updated AirPort Extremes and Time Capsules, which will have software update caching according to an article on 9 To 5 Mac by Mark Gurman. References to these have been found in the code of the latest AirPort Utility update. There are references of a 5th Generation AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n capability. Also there are references to a 4th Generation Time Capsule also with 802.11n capability. We’ve heard previously about codes that show Apple’s work towards software update caching, which is also present in the latest version. This will basically mean that future iOS and Mac updates could be downloaded via AirPort Extremes and Time Capsules and are stored locally. When devices are connected to them on the network the AirPort extremes and Time Capsules will work out which devices are connected, and then get the relevant updates for them. No longer will you have to wait for an update as it will already be stored locally. Those of you that own Apple products, like the iPhone, know all too well how long a download can take in busy times, especially soon after release. How nice would it be by having this process automated a little, and even better if its already downloaded before you get a chance to try and download yourself?
