The Abu Ghraib Prison Photos by Decius at 9:50 am EDT, Apr 30, 2004 |
So newspapers all over the planet are blaring these pictures today on the front page, but the issue seems to be 3rd page news in the domestic American media and the pictures are very difficult to locate online. Here they are. This isn't all of them but its enough. The soldiers explanations about having not gotten proper guidance from management seems ridiculous in light of the photographs. It should be obvious to anyone that this behavior is inappropriate. In case you haven't seen the stories, the individual on the box has been told that if he falls off the box he will be electrocuted... |

The solders in these photos should all be executed, under military law, for the future deaths of US solders they have caused. Do they think these prisoners are just going to fucking forget what these US solders did? Do they think the Iraqi people are just going to forget, when your Average Amed in the street sees this? These photos are exactly why the coffers of Hamas and other terrorist organizations overflows with money. These photos are exactly why an entire town will cheer as dead US contractors are dragging through the streets and mutilated. These photos are exactly what drives a average man to stop trying to live under a new, strange and uncertain system, and to don a jacket of C4 and Rat Poison and blow up a public place. The Iraqi people will not forget this. We will lose many many good, honest, solders for what these fucktards did today. |

I am appalled at the way prisoners were treated, as seen in these photos. There is no excuse for these actions, there is no spin, this is just plain wrong. My only hope is that this is an aberration, and *not* the way that prisoners across the country are being treated. If this *is* the way that my country is treating the enemy, then I will withdraw my support for the war. If these kinds of incidents are widespread, then I say get us out *now*. It would be better to let the Iraqis endure the anarchy that would follow, and deal with their own problems (or not), than to see American soldiers commit further atrocities of this nature. It's bad enough hearing the death toll rise. But in combination with seeing our soldiers torture and humiliate prisoners? No, that's too far. I supported this war to liberate Iraq from a ruthless dictator and to make life *better* for Iraqis -- not to inflict further humiliation of this type from American hands. |

There were some other graphic pictures of someone beaten and left for dead. It's questionable whether the prisoner was already dead. And I've heard the right wing chime in, about how although wrong, this treatment was not to the same extreme as what Saddam did to his own people or that other nations do to their prisoners. But the point seems to be lost. Americans and American soldiers are supposed to rise above this behavior. But again, people will continue to believe what they want. This has already been sloughed off as hype and exaggeration by the ones that really need to understand it. They don't see this behavior as treason, which is exactly what it is. |

Despicable, Deplorable and Abhorrent! I can only hope the full weight of the UCMJ is thrown at the participants and that they are made to be an example that justice can be served upon those who abuse privilege. It never ceases to amaze me how easily normally "good" people can be corrupted to put their morals aside when a mob mentality takes over. Regardless of why those prisoners were in our custody, there is no better time than the current to apply the golden rule, esp when the world is watching. |

Scott says "Personally, I think you should print these, laminate them, and carry them around with you wherever you go. When you run into someone at WalMart or work and they start talking about how Dubya 'is my president right or wrong' and 'we should nuke the whole middle east' and 'support our troops' - show them these pictures and remind them that our government is just as bad as the ones we topple. This is just the shit that you can see! It gets worse." |

I am so terribly ashamed that a woman would be involved in this. It makes me sick. I am not suprised however, that the US would be involved in such human rights abuses. It makes me terribly sad. |

This Meme is currently on the 3rd page of Google results for "abu ghraib prison photos". This whole prison photo situation makes me sick. [U: For the record, I don't think Rumsfeld should resign or anything like that. We are in the middle of a war. This situation appears to have been addressed before the public heard about it as is. ] |
