Decius: The information technology industry has shed one in four jobs in the past decade.
That blog post is about "the information sector", which includes books, movies, music, newspapers, and magazines, not just "IT". For a drill-down on software publishing in particular, see the BLS article, which predicts 30% growth in jobs over the period 2008-2018. This is the dominant source of predicted growth in the information sector, compensating for a nearly 20% drop in non-software publishing, as indicated in the overall view. Also look at more "applied" computing jobs, which are filed under "Professional and business services ; Computer systems design and related services", where BLS predicts 45% growth over the same ten year period. In "Management, scientific, and technical consulting services", BLS predicts nearly 83% growth. I'd expect that further digging on the BLS site would yield historical data of interest.
