Cambodian Killing Fields
Topic: Asian Travel 10:41 pm EST, Dec 16, 2002

When I was tracking the search terms that bring strangers to my personal site, interestingly enough, *the* most common search term was "prison pictures". I have no idea why, but I get people visiting my site from search engines with that exact search term, a couple times a week. Not "prison photos", not "pictures of prisons", not "Cambodian prisons"... It's always just "prison pictures". Anyway, here's the stuff that seems to be drawing them in. Pictures of the S-21 prison in Pnomh Penh, and the Cambodian Killing Fields, from my visit there in August 2001. It's pretty depressing stuff though, so view at your own risk.

Okay, it's a shameless plug, but I really have to mention my game site here. I'm General Manager of Online Community, and these games have been my babies for over 10 years. I'm proud of them. :)

If you want to play any of them, we've got a 30-day free trial. The amount of information that we ask for from users varies depending on a marketing program that we're experimenting with. Some users are asked for a credit card right away, and others can get in for a free trial with nothing more than a valid Email address.

It's kind of random as to which visitors get the offer, so if you want to be sure to get the "no credit card" signup option, use this "Elonka" link I set up for personal friends, to ensure they can get the 30-day free trial of our flagship product, GemStone III, as easily as possible:

This is one of my favorite surreal sites on the web. Be sure to check out the section on "Basics of Semiconductors" and look at the graph on conduction and valence bands.

CIA Kryptos Sculpture
Topic: Cryptography 8:05 pm EST, Dec 16, 2002

While I (Elonka) was giving my talk at CIA Headquarters in October, I managed to obtain some rubbings of the mysterious Kryptos sculpture in the main courtyard. Three of the four encoded sections on that sculpture have been cracked, but the last 97 characters are still unsolved. If this is something you're interested in working on, check this link for more information about the sculpture, as well as scans of the rubbings that I obtained.

Site Meter - Counter and Statistics Tracker
Topic: Web Design 7:50 pm EST, Dec 16, 2002

IMHO, Site Meter is *the* best webcounter service out there right now. It's free, easy to use, stable, and provides a wealth of information on visitors. Since my site got listed in Schneier's "Crypto-Gram" newsletter yesterday, I've been using sitemeter to see who's visiting my site, from where, and what they clicked on to get to my site. All as a free service. It's awesome. :)

BTW, I've gotten over 2000 unique visitors to http://elonka.com/steganography since yesterday. Whee!
