MEMRI: The Middle East Research Institute

Good collection of translated articles from Arabic media into English. Seems to cover viewpoints from all sides, too.

James Randi $1 Million Paranormal Challenge
Topic: Society 12:14 pm EST, Dec 31, 2002

This is the site of James Randi, one of the better-known debunkers out there. His site is an educational resource on "the paranormal, pseudoscientific and the supernatural," and is devoted to providing reliable information about paranormal claims.

His foundation is famous for offering a $1 million prize to anyone who can show -- under satisfactory observing conditions -- any type of paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event. To date, the prize remains unclaimed.

Al-Jazeera to provide English-language Web site
Topic: Current Events 10:50 pm EST, Dec 30, 2002

] "Al-Jazeera, the Arab satellite television channel known
] to broadcast statements from Osama bin Laden (news - web
] sites), will reach out to the West starting in February
] with an English-language Web site. "

Yes!

I've been craving the opportunity to read the Al-Jazeera news stories directly, and not just be limited to excerpted bits from BBC and CNN. I have yet to find a good online translator that would convert Arabic websites into something English-readable. So it'll be great to get Arabic news from the source (or at least closer to the source).

Clinton on Late Show - 9/11/2002
Topic: War on Terrorism 11:33 am EST, Dec 30, 2002

] There were lots and lots of terrorist attempts that most
] Americans don’t know about that were thwarted. An attempt
] to blow the Holland Tunnel and an attempt to blow up the
] Lincoln Tunnel. An attempt on the life of the Pope. An
] attempt to blow up LAX airport. Two attempts over the
] Millennium weekend to plant bombs in cities in the Northeast
] and the Northwest of the United States.

This is a transcript of ex-President Clinton's appearance on the David Letterman show on September 11th, 2002. Among other things, Clinton spoke about terrorist activities and investigations during his own presidency. I found it interesting to hear his personal perspective on things, and to hear about some of the terrorist plots that never made the news, since they were stopped *before* they happened.

Babelfish Translation Service
Topic: Society 11:36 pm EST, Dec 27, 2002

A good online translation service, if you're working with one of the more common languages on the web. It only handles French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Italian, Korean, and Portuguese. But what it does, it does well.

Croatian Traditional Music
Topic: Folk 1:29 am EST, Dec 27, 2002

This site has some downloadable MP3 clips of traditional Croatian music. There aren't a whole lot of such MP3s out there (yet), so I found this site valuable.

JoBlo's movie review of LOTR: The Two Towers
Topic: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Films 3:58 pm EST, Dec 23, 2002

] "A mediocre follow-up to the impressive opening picture,
] THE TWO TOWERS is too long, spends too much time with
] bits that don't bring much to the story, too little time
] with the characters that we got to know in the first
] installment and other than an all-out war between good
] and bad to end things off on a high note, not much that's
] particularly memorable."

This is from one of the very few reviewers who didn't like "The Two Towers". I don't agree with his "5 out of 10" score, but other than that I think he did an excellent job of pointing out some of the movie's flaws.

Also, for entertainment value, he has included a link at the bottom of his page, which points to many of the Emails that he's received about his review. Many of them are evidently from people who are hating him for hating the movie! (chuckle) It's a fun read.

Ah, that's from one of my company's conventions back in 1998 or so. There's a pic of me covering one of my contractors' ears (I was probably trying to protect his virgin ears from some dirty joke that somebody was telling) ;)

I don't much care for that pic, though there's a better one of me in medieval garb further down on the page. If you want to see it, it's here:
